Paramount+ has announced that its recently launched younger-skewing “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” series has been cancelled.

The studio has already shot a second season which is currently in post-production and is still likely to air next year, but the show won’t go any further than that.

The series has been majorly polarising amongst the fandom. Anticipation was low before its premiere. Upon airing, it drew a better than expected critical response but audiences have been decidedly more mixed. The show also become a frequent target of the ‘anti-woke’ crowd online.

More telling though was the ratings with the series never managing to chart among Nielsen’s weekly top 10 streaming lists for viewership.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” has a fourth season to air next year and a fifth and final season in 2027, both runs already filmed.

At this point though, no further “Star Trek” TV series are in production and its not clear if franchise runner Alex Kurtzman will stay on – especially with the new Paramount Skydance regime having already teased plans for a reboot/overhaul.

CBS Studios and Paramount+ say in a statement: “We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”
