Fans of Star Trek’s Captain Kirk may not have to give up hope of seeing the character return. Although Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is approaching its conclusion, one of the franchise’s key actors has continued to express optimism about a future project centered on the iconic Enterprise captain. While no official announcement has been made, the actor remains interested in revisiting the role if Paramount decides to move forward with the proposed series.
Paul Wesley talks about proposed Captain Kirk spin-off
Paul Wesley has shared a new update regarding the proposed Captain Kirk spin-off that has generated discussion among Star Trek fans.
The actor currently portrays James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The series gradually introduces viewers to a version of the legendary captain before he officially takes command of the USS Enterprise. The series is scheduled to end after its fifth season. Thus, many fans have turned their attention toward the possibility of Captain Kirk appearing in a proposed spin-off. The project is currently known as Star Trek: Year One. The project could become the franchise’s next television series.
During a panel appearance at FanX Comic Convention in Indianapolis, Wesley discussed the future of the proposed series. He also reflected on recent casting developments. The conversation touched on the arrival of actors Thomas Jane and Kai Murakami as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Hikaru Sulu. Both characters are closely associated with Kirk’s original Enterprise crew.
When asked whether these additions could help establish a foundation for a future series, Wesley said discussions about the project continue behind the scenes. According to the actor, he and his fellow cast members frequently discuss the possibility. He added that they would enjoy continuing the story. However, he acknowledged that no official decision has been announced by the studio. Wesley also joked that Paramount may have misplaced his phone number (via ScreenRant).
The spin-off concept has received support from executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. Their vision for Star Trek: Year One would continue directly after Strange New Worlds. It would explore Kirk’s earliest experiences leading the Enterprise. The proposed series could also feature familiar characters, including Spock, Uhura, Chapel, Scotty, Bones, and Sulu.
Despite the interest surrounding the project, challenges remain. Reports have indicated that several Strange New Worlds production sets in Toronto have already been dismantled. At present, no new live-action Star Trek series has officially entered production.
