Squid Game Creator on Season 4 Possibility After Season 3 Ends

While fans gear up for the upcoming release of Squid Game Season 3, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Netflix’s fan-favorite series, has come out to share an update regarding the possibility of Season 4 in the franchise. In a disappointing turn of events for Squid Game admirers, Hwang seems to have closed the doors for a potential fourth installment in the series, confirming that the show will conclude this year itself.

Hwang Dong-hyuk is interested in Squid Game spin-off instead of Season 4

Hwang Dong-hyuk recently opened up about the future of his hit South Korean dystopian survival thriller drama. The Primetime Emmy winner noted that Squid Game does not have a Season 4 in the making and will wrap up the story of Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun with the forthcoming Season 3.

“After watching Season 3, some may think there’s room for a Season 4, while others may feel there’s no need for one,” Hwang remarked. He also confirmed that Squid Game will effectively end after the premiere of Season 3. Nevertheless, he did express interest in exploring the vast world of Squid Game aside from Seong Gi-hun, although not immediately, stating, “I have considered the idea of a spin-off. There were moments during production when I grew curious myself.” (via The Korea Times)

In an earlier interview, Hwang Dong-hyuk conveyed that if a Squid Game spin-off ends up getting greenlit, he has some ideas in mind regarding the proposed project’s timeline. During his June 2 appearance at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards red carpet, Hwang noted, “If I make [a] spin-off, it will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2. There [was] a three-year gap between Season 1 and 2. So, I want to show what they did for those times.”

After denying possibilities for Squid Game Season 4 and teasing a potential spin-off in the future, Hwang Dong-hyuk will now shift his attention to the final installment in his acclaimed series, which comes out on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
