Spider-Man: Brand New Day Almost Had a Much Bigger Villains’ War

Spider-Man: Brand New Day almost featured more members of the titular character’s iconic rogue gallery. Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of the movie, detailed in a new interview that he had to leave a big fight scene on the cutting-room floor.

Classic Spider-Man villains cut from Brand New Day may return in a sequel

Cretton spoke about Spider-Man: Brand New Day during an interview with Nerdtropolis. When asked if there were any obscure villains from the comics that he couldn’t fit into the final movie, the filmmaker responded, “Yeah, there were a lot.” He revealed that there was a “whole other scene that ended up being cut from the movie” in which they were “going to throw a whole bunch of villains into this giant fight.”

The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director continued, “We were looking at a lot of classics, and it was really fun, though. We got to design a lot of them.” He then teased that these characters might appear in the next Spider-Man movie.

This is not the first time that people behind Spider-Man 4 have spoken on the prospects of a fifth movie. Producer Amy Pascal told Fandango back in 2021 ahead of the release of No Way Home that they were planning another Spider-Man trilogy.

More recently, she told SFX magazine that she hoped Cretton would make more Spider-Man movies with them (via ComicBook.com). She went on to call Cretton an “incred­ibly gif­ted action dir­ector.” She added, “But there is not one thing in this movie that doesn’t come from emo­tion and heart and char­ac­ter.”

Cretton directed Spider-Man: Brand New Day from Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers’ screenplay. Its cast includes Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, Zendaya as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, and many more.

The movie premieres in US theaters on July 31, 2026.
