Sony Pictures Entertainment has made it official – they will restore and re-open Los Angeles’ iconic Cinerama Dome. In addition, its subsidiary exhibition chain, Alamo Drafthouse, will reopen the former 14-screen Hollywood ArcLight Cinemas behind it.
Renovations will begin next month and go through early 2028. Though operated by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the “Cinerama” name and exterior will remain intact.
One caveat is the Dome will not offer a dine-in experience like other Alamo Drafthouse locations, but it will feature the same programming, including repertory screenings, filmmaker series and premieres.
SPE Motion Picture Group CEO Tom Rothman said in a statement:
“Hot damn! We’re bringing the Dome back, baby. We believe in moviegoing down to our soul, and no venue on earth stands more for that than the one-of-a-kind Dome. I am deeply proud that Sony is investing in Hollywood, literally. The Dome has hosted generations of unforgettable movie moments. Our goal is to preserve its legendary history while ensuring it remains vibrant now and far into the future.”
The re-opened ArcLight Cinemas, which will now be called an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, will offer the chain’s signature dine-in experience and programming.
It will have 35mm and 70mm capabilities to show archival films, as well as premium format screens with 4K laser projection.
