FX has added five new cast members to the second season of its Emmy-winning drama series Shōgun as production begins in Vancouver, according to Deadline.
Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi and Takashi Yamaguchi have joined the ensemble. Kukihara will play Gabriel, Satô will portray Rin, Nishida will play Jōshin, Koichi is Saitō and Yamaguchi will portray Kanō.
The new additions join a cast that includes Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Fumi Nikaidô, Ren Meguro, Asami Mizukawa, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Yûko Miyamoto, Yuka Kouri, Tommy Bastow, Jun Kunimura, Yoriko Dôguchi, Eita Okuno and Takaaki Enoki. Kei Kawamura and Laura Schiff handled casting for the season.
The first season followed Lord Yoshii Toranaga as “his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him.” The arrival of an English pilot, John Blackthorne, who “shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor,” shaped the outcome of a civil war.
Season two takes place more than a decade after the first season, with Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis reprising their roles. Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yûko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno and Yuka Kouri also return. FX renewed the series in April 2025 and later confirmed additional casting.
Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks created Shōgun for television based on James Clavell’s novel, and FX Productions produces the series. Kondo, Marks, Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca and Sanada serve as executive producers. The series will stream on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally and air on FX.
The first season won 18 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. It also received honors from the Golden Globes, SAG, WGA, DGA, PGA, TCA and Independent Spirit Awards.
