The Ottawa Senators will be without one of their top defencemen as they continue their push for a playoff spot.

Thomas Chabot is set to miss four to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a broken arm, head coach Travis Green told reporters on Thursday.

He suffered the injury Monday against the New York Rangers after he was slashed by J.T. Miller at the end of the first period. He immediately grabbed his right arm in pain as he skated to the bench and did not return for the second period.

Chabot, 29, has seven goals and 24 assists in 55 games this season. He has the second-highest ice time among Senators skaters at 22:34 per game, behind only fellow blueliner Jake Sanderson.

He missed 15 games earlier this season with an upper-body injury.

Drafted 18th overall by Ottawa in 2015, the Sainte-Marie, Que., native has 78 goals and 257 assists in 567 career games with the team.

Sanderson, meanwhile, has been out of the Senators’ lineup since suffering an upper-body injury in a March 7 game against the Seattle Kraken. However, he’s set to travel with the team on their upcoming Florida road trip.

It wasn’t clarified whether or not he would suit up for those games against the Tampa Lightning and Florida Panthers.

The 23-year-old has been a top blue-line contributor this year, tallying 11 goals and 37 assists in 62 games this season, and recently won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics with Team USA.

The Senators currently hold the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with 11 games left in the regular season. They return to action Thursday against the Penguins before going up against the Lightning on Saturday, and the Panthers on Monday.
