The US has negotiated ‘permanent military rights’ over Greenland

Trump got what he wanted in the Greenland tug-of-war.

We have been following here on TGP the efforts by the Donald J. Trump administration to have the US control the security of Greenland and the wider Arctic region as a cornerstone of the defense of the Western Hemisphere.

Last Friday (18), these efforts were crowned with the announcement that the US, Denmark, and Greenland will sign today (22), on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, an agreement giving the US ‘permanent military rights’ over the Island.

As a result of this agreement, the US is moving to open two new military bases, as a first step in the expansion of the US military’s footprint on the territory.

A Cold War-era base in southern Greenland will be re-established, and another one will be set on the east coast of the island.

In the days of the Cold War, the US had 17 military installations in Greenland, holding more than 10,000 troops.

Today, only Pituffik ⁠Space Base remains, with some 150 US military personnel.

Reuters reported:

“The sites are Narsarsuaq, whose population has dwindled to a few dozen people since the US closed its Bluie West One military base in the 1950s, and Mestersvig, a military outpost used by the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, a Danish special forces unit, said two of ⁠the people.

Denmark, Greenland and the United States are expected to sign their new agreement at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City at 10:30 a.m. ET (1430 GMT) on Tuesday.

The text of the agreement has not been made public and the three people familiar with the deal, speaking on condition of anonymity, said its details will not be finalized until it is signed.”

According to the White House, the agreement will ‘secure and defend ‌the security ⁠of Greenland and the United States’.

The agreement forbids US adversaries from having a military base or making sensitive investments in Greenland, unless express US written approval is given.

Daily Mail reported:

“’We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a magnificent future with respect to this large, and highly strategic, parcel of land,’ the president [posted]. ‘We will be very protective of it!’

‘This is a dream come true for the United States of America, one that is very important, historic, and special,’ he concluded.

Greenland and Denmark’s parliaments will also have to approve it, their governments said in a joint statement.”
