Netflix has finally shared the first official photos from Ray Gunn, its upcoming neo-noir sci-fi action animated movie from The Incredibles and Ratatouille director Brad Bird. The film is scheduled to premiere sometime this year.

“In Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate future as seen from 1939, private eye Raymond Gunn is drawn into a case involving aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova,” reads the official synopsis.

Who is in the Ray Gunn images?

The Ray Gunn photos feature a first look at the animated movie’s main characters, portrayed by Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell as Raymond Gunn, Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson as Venus Nova, and Tom Waits as Eyera. This marks Rockwell and Johansson’s latest collaboration, after starring together in 2010’s Iron Man 2 and 2019’s Jojo Rabbit. The story follows the last human private detective in a futuristic world, where humans and aliens coexist. It offers the audience a glimpse into the film’s futuristic world.

“Having the opportunity to collaborate with Brad Bird is a career milestone for me; I have loved his work my entire life,” Johannson said in a statement. “This project is so uniquely special because it is a total realization of where Brad is currently on his artistic journey. I can’t wait for audiences to see this extraordinary animation that looks like nothing else out there.”

Ray Gunn is directed by Bird, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins, based on a story by The Incredibles creator. This serves as Bird’s first non-Pixar directorial animated project in a long while, after 1999’s The Iron Giant. The film is produced by John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Lisa Beroud, David Ellison, and Dana Goldberg. It is a production by Skydance Animation.

“Ray Gunn has been in my mind for over 30 years. The film is a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the ’40s…it’s Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers,” Bird said. “I’ve been a fan of both of those sorts of genres, and blending them together seemed fun, and a chance to play with a lot of very cinematic elements, and extreme characters.”

He continued, “There’s a big chunk of people who don’t watch animation. That’s a group I’m anxious to persuade because it’s an amazing art form that is way too limited in people’s minds. Animation as a medium is too interesting to limit what kind of stories can be told.”
