Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock and Aidan Quinn in Practical MagicSandra Bullock has opened up about why her love interest, played by Aidan Quinn, won’t be back in the upcoming Practical Magic sequel.
The Oscar winner’s character, Sally Owens, may have had her happy ever after with Aidan’s Investigator Gary Hallett in the 1998 cult classic, but it looks like their romance may not have worked out after all.
“And if you know the original film, you can probably guess why,” Sandra teased when she appeared at CinemaCon alongside her on-screen sister Nicole Kidman last week.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman at CinemaConPractical Magic follows a multigenerational family of witches whose heartbroken ancestor cursed their bloodline, so that any man who falls in love with them dies a tragic death.
At the end of the film, it appeared that the women had beaten the curse, and finally got their happy endings.
The upcoming sequel will explore the curse as a new generation of Owens women discover this family secret.
Judging from the trailer, Sally and her sister Gillian appear to be single in this new chapter in the story, with Sandra’s character remarking that “everyone we love dies” hinting that the curse has returned, with tragic consequences for Gary.
Aidan had previously confirmed that he was not invited to appear in the sequel.
“I would have said yes, but I wasn’t asked. Of course I would,” he told Dublin’s Spin 1038.
“They were both great to work with,” he recalled of Sandra and Nicole back in the February interview. “You know, most of my stuff was with Sandy, but they were both phenomenal to work with. We had a good time.”
While Aidan wasn’t asked to return, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest will both appear in Practical Magic 2 alongside newcomers Lee Pace, Joey King and Maisie Williams.
Practical Magic 2 is slated for release in September 2026.
