Russia has launched a fresh bombardment of Ukraine’s capital just hours after Donald Trump claimed “we’re the closest we’ve been” to ending the war.

At least one person was killed and 22 injured, including four children, after a wave of missiles and attack drones were launched at Kyiv overnight between Wednesday and Thursday.

A bridge, an ambulance station and residential buildings were struck during the bombardment.

The latest attacks come despite Trump expressing fresh optimism that an end t the war is in sight.

Speaking on Wednesday, he said: “The other day I was talking to Vladimir Putin about settling his war with Ukraine, which I think we’re getting closer to. Maybe now the closest we’ve been.”

The latest Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure fly in the face of US envoy Steve Witkoff’s declaration that Putin is “a humanitarian”.

His remark, made during a face-to-face meeting with the Russian president, sparked a furious backlash from across the political spectrum.

Trump also claimed earlier this week that Russia “has been fine on Ukraine” despite its ongoing attacks on the country it invaded nearly five years ago.

His bizarre comment came on the same day that a Russian drone killed a little child in a park.
