The NBA is projecting a lower-than-expected salary cap for next season.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Monday that the NBA has informed teams that the salary cap for the 2026-27 season is on track to be set at $165 million, $1 million below a projection made earlier this season.
Charania added that the adjustment was due to a reduction in projected revenue from local media deals.
The $1-million reduction will now set the minimum cap at $149 million, the luxury-tax level at $201 million, the first apron at $209 million and the second apron at $222 million next season.
The new projection is approximently $10.6 million higher than this season’s cap of $154.4 million. That’s a smaller jump than the previous off-season, when the cap rose $14 million above the 2024-25 level.
The adjustment comes ahead of the NBA’s Board of Governors meetings later this week. The governors are expected to vote on expansion bids from both Las Vegas and Seattle at the meetings, with the 2028-29 season the target for adding the two teams.
