Marvel Studios’ “The Punisher: One Last Kill” special presentation hits the Disney+ streaming service on Tuesday and its star Jon Bernthal indicates the one-off is set to go places.
Last seen breaking out of The Kingpin’s holding cells in the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” the special will deal with what Bernthal’s Frank Castle got up to after that and likely why he didn’t return for its second season.
He also has to set things up in a way that will have the character ready for his appearance in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in two months.
Bernthal recently appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show and called the presentation “the most psychologically complex, darkest version of the Punisher that you’re going to see… I believe it’s what the fans want.”
He adds that his producer, Nick Koumalatsos, is a Marine Raider who helped considerably with making this different. A fellow Marine Raider and another Green Beret were also on set to help:
“They’re just beautiful human beings, and they’re great, and they really wanted to do something, you know, for the veterans community and especially for these guys, the tip of the spear guys who are really suffering with entering back into the world. And I think that’s very much at the core of a Frank story.”
As for Frank Castle being a part of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” jumping from the Punisher special’s TV-MA rating to that film’s PG-13 one will be an adjustment:
“With Spider-Man, I think what was most important, because, obviously, tonally it’s different and such an honour to be a part of it, especially with my dear friend Tom Holland. It was important to us that one Punisher could walk off one set and walk onto the other. Tonally, they couldn’t be more different, but I hope we were able to achieve that. It’s very important.”
In addition, Judith Light looks to be playing Ma Gnucci in the special. The actress wouldn’t say what her role is, but tells Today: “I think people will be surprised. I think they will really appreciate it. This is really about transformation and what it means to be a person who holds on to revenge.”
Reviews for “The Punisher One: Last Kill” will be out on Tuesday night, right as the special launches, with social media reactions coming 24 hours before.
