The fate of one of Prime Video‘s most critically acclaimed series after three years of uncertainty has been confirmed, and it isn’t looking good. He explained how budget constraints and creative challenges ultimately prevented the show from continuing beyond its first season.
I’m a Virgo Season 2 confirmed to be dead at Prime Video
Creator Boots Riley confirmed to Screen Rant that I’m a Virgo will not return for a second season on Prime Video. The series starred Jharrel Jerome as Cootie, a 13-foot-tall young Black man navigating life in Oakland. Walton Goggins also starred as billionaire-turned-vigilante Jay Whittle/The Hero in the critically acclaimed show.
Riley explained that budget issues forced significant cuts during the first season’s production. The show ran short on its budget two weeks before production wrapped, needing $3 million to finish properly. His creative team “ended up having to cut 40% of the script,” including a “whole penultimate episode.”
Prime Video reportedly encouraged Riley to save the cut material for a potential second season. However, Riley found that approach creatively unworkable when development discussions began. He stated the remaining ideas “only work in the context” of the cut material from season one.
The creator also revealed that Oscar-nominated actor LaKeith Stanfield was originally set to appear in the series. Stanfield’s schedule with Disney’s Haunted Mansion ultimately prevented his involvement in the show. Riley joked that Stanfield’s star power might have helped secure the additional funding he needed.
I’m a Virgo garnered a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after its June 2023 premiere. The season ended on a cliffhanger involving a mysterious rash growing under Cootie’s skin. Riley humorously told fans that the “second season happens in your imagination.”
The cast has since moved on to other successful projects across film and television. Goggins reteamed with Prime Video for the hit Fallout series adaptation shortly after. Kara Young became the first Black actress to earn four consecutive Tony nominations for Best Featured Actress.
