There have been several mid-budget genre movies distributed by streaming-first companies that have underperformed at the box office recently. These titles — like Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey, David Ayer’s A Working Man, and the action sequel The Accountant 2 — have all been highly successful on Prime Video, even if they weren’t exactly theatrical blockbusters. There is, however, another category of mega-budget movies that have also gained solid traction at home, but can’t help but be categorized as box-office bombs. Last year, it was the action comedy film Red One, which grossed less than $100 million domestically against a reported budget of $250 million. This year, another sci-fi fantasy film has replaced it.
