The historic visit of Pope Leo XIV to France continued yesterday with two massive events: between 800,000 and a million people congregated in an open-air mass in Paris’s Place de la Concorde – with the crowd lining all the way up the Champs-Élysées.
For many, it was the high point of the four-day tour.

The Telegraph reported:
“In his sermon to the city, he warned against ‘material goods’, ‘immediate gratification’ and ‘the countless little idols that promise the Moon but leave our hearts empty’.
He also told the thousands of young people present: ‘You are the Church today. How wonderful it is to see your enthusiasm, your dynamism, your commitment and the joy within Christian communities’, the Pope said before paying tribute to ‘this beautiful country, France’.”
The streets of Paris have become one giant open-air confessional as thousands of people—between 800,000 and 1 million—fill the Champs-Élysées for Mass with the Pope this Saturday, September 27.

Many knelt on the Champs-Élysées to pray during the hour-and-a-half-long service.
“’From this beautiful city of Paris, I pray fervently that the living water of the Holy Spirit may pour out over the whole of France’.”
“Do not keep your faith in Jesus Christ to yourselves. Rather, let it overflow.”

“The Pope spared a thought for families, praising those who, ‘despite the many difficulties on a daily basis, persevere courageously in your mission. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the good that is being accomplished through you’, he added.”
One absence that greatly improved the event was outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron.
But emotions were to run even higher as Leo later visited the Sanctuary of Lourdes.

“Pope Leo XIV doubled down on his opposition to euthanasia and medically assisted dying during a visit Sunday to Lourdes, the French Catholic shrine associated with miraculous cures and now also a place of healing for survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
Leo denounced the ‘current trends that seek to redefine the value of human life in illness, suffering and old age’, during a Mass on the Lourdes prairie before some 150,000 people, many of them in wheelchairs. ‘Here, no one is turned away due to their frailty’, Leo said in his homily.”
