Pope Francis died at his residence, Domus Sanctae Marthae, a day after celebrating Easter and making an appearance at the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, announced the news in a statement.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the Triune God,” part of the statement says. (via NBC New York)

In the ensuing hours, tributes have been pouring in from various parts of the world. JD Vance, who is a Catholic and met the Pope over the Easter weekend, mentioned their interaction in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him,” he shared, adding, “I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful.”
