At times, the most powerful fuel for a team comes from within its own dugout. As of now, that team is none other than the Chicago Cubs. On a side note, the Cubs are currently four games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals. That means they are trailing only the New York Mets in the NL standings.
No doubt, every Cub is playing exceptionally. But most notably, it’s Pete Crow-Armstrong and his $85 million teammate, driving the sudden surge of healthy competition.
PCA and his teammate Seiya Suzuki are arguably the Cubs’ key offensive players. And apparently, they are locked in a healthy, fierce competition. Trust us, you are going to find it both hilarious and oddly productive. They have a thing where they go and find who can finish the season with the most home runs. A Brooklyn 99 inspiration or what!
In a media appearance, Crow-Armstrong got all real about this. “Yeah, I let him know today that he hit two and I still got him… I said any day he hits a homer, I’m going to have to do it as well. If that turns into real motivation, then great, that’s awesome.”

He further added, “We talk about it a lot; it’s always easy going up when the rest of the lineup makes it easy for you.” It’s certainly playful. But more than that, it’s evidently pushing both of them towards elevating their game.
Want to know where both of them stand in the race?
As of now, PCA holds a narrow edge with 17, which is just one ahead of Suzuki’s 16.
PCA even opened up about a Cubs game on June 7. That day, Suzuki hit two home runs. Yet, he trails Crow-Armstrong by one. It’s because the 23-year-old went yard as well.
Although both Suzuki and PCA have a similar slugging percentage – .563, Suzuki’s .895 OPS is a bit higher than PCA’s .877. So, it’s perfect how the Cubs are chasing the NL Central crown while one more race is unfolding just under the surface.
All-Star spotlight on Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki
The MLB All-Star game is right around the corner. The Chicago Cubs have many strong candidates, including PCA and Suzuki. The Cubs had a fairly decent start to the season. And with fierce ongoing competition, both PCA and Suzuki are making serious cases for All-Star honors.
When it comes to Pete Crow-Armstrong, he’s practically a lock to make the All-Star roster. Perhaps, he could even begin in the National League. It’s actually his remarkable defense in center field that has earned him the tag of the best in the NL. That’s not it. He’s also leading all of baseball in terms of stolen bases, displaying his all-around abilities.
Coming to offense, he has been tied for fifth in home runs in the NL. Moreover, he ranks third in runs batted in all of MLB. Want more? Well, he is also second in the league in Wins Above Replacement (WAR). And it’s just early June…
Next, we have Seiya Suzuki. In the 2025 season, he’s off to the best start. Particularly because the Cubs are leading the NL Central. Suzuki is primarily handling the DH role. He had hit 16 home runs so far and comes among the top 3 MLB players in terms of RBIs.
But when it comes to DH, he’s facing difficult competition. Particularly from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ star Shohei Ohtani – the generational star, leading the NL with 23 home runs. Suzuki’s former teammate Kyle Schwarber is also a candidate who could siphon away his votes.
But all things apart, a healthy competition is keeping the Cubs’ clubhouse healthy and running. For now, it’s time for us to sit back and enjoy the game…
