Despite the character’s brutal death during the second episode of Season 2, The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin promises more of Joel in the succeeding episodes and/or seasons of the post-apocalyptic series.

Episode 2, titled “Through the Valley,” had fans asking regarding Joel’s (played by Pedro Pascal) future in the series. The episode saw the character die at the hands of the vengeful Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever), with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) present to witness Joel’s brutal execution.

What did Craig Mazin say about Pedro Pascal’s The Last of Us future?

Joel may be gone, but he’s still very much a part of the show’s future, according to Mazin. In an episode of The Last of Us podcast, the co-creator said:

“But I will say, and I’ll be intentional about this, that we do know that for the viewer, there are some mysteries here. There’s some gaps about Ellie and Joel’s relationship, and I don’t think it’s a spoiler based on the fact that there is a trailer out there with lots of shots in it — this is not the last we will see of Joel.”

The series chronicled both Joel and Ellie’s exceptional bond, which viewers saw grow during the first season. However, one of Joel’s decisions caused a rift in their relationship. This led to their estrangement and “cruel separation” during the second season. And with Ellie avoiding Joel during the first moments of Season 2, her last memory with Joel would be the last moments before he’s gone forever.

Season 2 also stars Gabriel Luna, Rutina Wesley, Young Mazino, Isabela Merced, Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Jeffrey Wright, and Catherine O’Hara.

The Last of Us Season 2, which premiered on April 13, airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO. The first season is available to stream on Max.
