Paul Bettany recently revealed the surprising way he got cast as Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview, the English actor shared that an action horror movie he starred in, which became a huge flop, played a key role in landing him the part. Notably, before portraying the android superhero, Bettany voiced Tony Stark’s AI J.A.R.V.I.S., which operated his Iron Man armors.
Paul Bettany on how Priest helped him for Vision casting
Bettany recently appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy, Sad, Confused. In it, he discussed his role in the Sky Atlantic series, Amadeus, and his return as Vision in VisionQuest. During the interaction, the host credited Jon Favreau for casting the actor as J.A.R.V.I.S. in the Iron Man series, before asking if Joss Whedon was the reason the latter got Vision.
“That was Joss, yeah,” he replied. He then recounted how he got the role, calling it “a pretty great story.” Bettany revealed that he made an action movie called Priest, which flopped at the box office. He added that Whedon approached him to play Vision while he was unemployed due to the film’s financial failure.
“I found out that when he talked it through with Kevin [Feige] and co., they were like ‘Yeah, I mean, he’s so fun. He’s fun and would have really enjoyed working with him, but can he play a superhero?” Bettany further recalled. “And they showed him Priest.” He and Horowitz soon mutually noted that the film the former thought may have ruined his career ended up becoming his “test tape” for Vision.
Bettany also shared his understanding of how life works in mysterious ways, with regard to his casting as Vision. The Dogville actor remarked, “Life is curly, and you just don’t know what’s coming down the pike.”
VisionQuest will premiere on Disney+ on October 14, 2026. It will serve as the final installment of the trilogy that began with WandaVision (2021) and continued with Agatha All Along (2024).
Terry Matalas, who previously worked on Star Trek: Picard, is the showrunner. James Spader will star opposite Bettany, reprising his role as Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Also featuring are Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, James D’Arcy, Orla Brady, Emily Hampshire, and Ruaridh Mollica.
