The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb has revealed why he chose Madelyn Cline for Day Drinker. The Lionsgate thriller stars Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz alongside the Outer Banks star. Webb spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the casting process for the upcoming film.

Webb admitted he initially knew little about Cline before the studio suggested her name. He had barely seen Outer Banks at that point. However, her massive following and the show’s success prompted him to investigate further.

“We looked at a lot of people,” Webb told THR. “But Maddie has a high profile for a young actor.” He highlighted her social media presence and Outer Banks’ strong performance as key factors. Webb then went back and carefully studied her work on the Netflix series.

The director found Cline’s screen presence immediately compelling after watching the show. “She’s beautiful and talented but also has a relatability that I thought was very appealing,” he said. Webb also consulted Glass Onion director Rian Johnson, who praised Cline’s abilities.

Webb explained that the role required a specific emotional quality to complement Depp’s performance style. “Johnny’s not one to be particularly vulnerable,” Webb noted. He described Depp as “a dancer, a trickster” and “one of the great virtuoso actors of our time.” Yet Webb needed someone who could provide emotional depth the film required.

“He doesn’t cry on camera,” Webb continued. “So, I needed somebody who could embrace a kind of pathos and give the movie a heart.” He confirmed Cline delivered exactly that quality. “And Maddie is very good at that,” the director added. Cline plays a bartender on a private yacht in the Marc Webb-directed thriller. Day Drinker arrives in theaters on March 26, 2027.
