Being hailed as the “Largest and Greatest Puzzle Game Ever,” Order of the Sinking Star lives up to this bold claim right from the offset.
Not only are the aforementioned 1,000 puzzles all hand-crafted, they also tie into the greater world in perfect harmony.
“We started with these four component games, and the idea initially was to mash them together and generate these possibilities…the initial period was just playing around and seeing what happens…
A lot of the time, that would raise new design questions!” – Jonathan Blow
Joining a crew made up of a queen, a thief, a warrior, a wizard, and a talking boat, Order of the Sinking Star has players slowly learning more about its world through both gameplay and notes.
As we saw how each of Order of the Sinking Star’s puzzles built upon the last across its four expansive worlds, one phrase kept popping up:
“Ah-ha!”
We all like “ah-ha” moments – they’re a bona-fide reward for curiosity and persistence!
During our brief hands-off session with Order of the Sinking Star, “ah-ha” shone bright.
“There are certainly different playstyles, right?
Some types of players want to get to an ending, while other players want to notice and enjoy details.” – Jonathan Blow
Adding to Order of the Sinking Star’s design contributions are Alan Hazelden (A Monster’s Expedition), Sean Barrett (Promesst), Jonah Ostroff (Heroes of Sokoban), Zach Polansky (Enigmash), Patrick Traynor (Patrick’s Parabox), Marc ten Bosch (Miegakure), and other top talent.
A grand adventure 10 years in the making, Jonathan Blow’s puzzler Order of the Sinking Star is set to captivate players – and make them say “ah-ha!” – when it launches next year.
Order of the Sinking Star will launch for the PC in 2026, with additional platforms and release timing for the game revealed at a later date.
In the interim, one can wishlist Order of the Sinking Star via its official Steam page and visit the official website.
