Scott Brash has spent years reaching the top of equestrian sport. Now, the two-time Olympic champion finds himself at the center of a police investigation after a fatal road collision in Spain claimed the life of a 20-year-old motorcyclist.

The Scottish showjumper, 40, was reportedly driving an Audi Q3 carrying Sira Martinez, the daughter of Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique, when the vehicles collided near Oliva, Valencia, on Thursday evening, October 8. While Brash and Martinez escaped without injuries, the young motorcyclist died at the scene, turning the incident into a tragedy with serious legal implications.

Spanish authorities are investigating Brash on suspicion of causing death through negligence. Initial reports suggest that an unlawful maneuver may have contributed to the collision, although investigators have yet to establish the full circumstances. Brash has not been convicted of any offense, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The crash occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on the N-332 near Oliva, on Spain’s eastern coast. According to the Civil Guard in Valencia, a motorcycle collided with the side of a car, killing its 20-year-old Spanish rider.

Emergency medical teams arrived at the scene, but they could not save the motorcyclist. The car’s two occupants, meanwhile, escaped unharmed. The starkly different outcomes have left investigators working to determine precisely how the collision happened and whether the driver’s actions contributed to the fatality.

Brash reportedly underwent roadside alcohol and drug tests, both of which returned negative results. However, those results do not settle the central question of how the collision occurred.

The driver has been placed under investigation for suspected negligent homicide, with reports indicating that he may be summoned to appear before a judge. The legal process will determine whether the available evidence supports further proceedings.

For now, the investigation concerns the circumstances surrounding the motorcyclist’s death, not a proven finding of criminal responsibility. Neither Brash’s sporting reputation nor the negative test results resolve the questions that authorities must answer.

Martinez, 26, was travelling in the passenger seat and was also unharmed. She has pursued her own career in show jumping, following a path into equestrian sport separate from her father’s high-profile football career. Luis Enrique, the former Spain and Barcelona manager, currently coaches Paris Saint-Germain.

The crash has brought two prominent figures from the equestrian world into the same difficult situation. Yet the most consequential part of the story remains the death of the young motorcyclist and the investigation into what led to it.

Taking a glimpse at Scott Brash’s remarkable career

The investigation marks a stark contrast with the achievements that have defined Brash’s career. Raised in Peebles, Scotland, he developed a passion for horses as a child on his family’s farm. What began with a pony and a childhood dream eventually became one of the most successful careers in modern show jumping.

Brash reached the Olympic summit at London 2012, helping Great Britain win team gold alongside his horse Hello Sanctos. The victory established him among the sport’s elite, but it was only the beginning of a remarkable run. He later helped Britain secure another team gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, this time riding Hello Jefferson.

Between those Olympic triumphs, Brash achieved another milestone that set him apart from his peers. In 2015, he became the first rider to win the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping, securing consecutive Grand Prix victories in Geneva, Aachen, and Spruce Meadows. The feat earned him a €1 million ($1,120,300) prize and cemented his place in the sport’s history.

His career has also included success on the Longines Global Champions Tour, appearances at multiple Olympic Games, and recognition among the world’s leading riders. Brash received an MBE in 2013 and was inducted into the British Horse Society Equestrian Hall of Fame in 2015.

But elite sport rarely follows a perfectly smooth trajectory. After Hello Sanctos suffered an injury, Brash endured a difficult period and slipped down the world rankings. Rather than abandon his ambitions, he worked to rebuild his stable and return to the highest level of competition.

That persistence helped him find success again, culminating in the Paris Olympic gold medal in 2024. His career has been defined by resilience, patience, and the ability to deliver under pressure.

Now, however, Brash faces a situation that cannot be measured in medals or rankings. The investigation in Spain will focus on the evidence surrounding Thursday’s collision, while a young man’s death has left a family facing an immeasurable loss.

As authorities continue their inquiries, the facts must be established before conclusions are drawn. For Brash, the immediate reality is a police investigation that stands in sharp contrast to the sporting achievements that have defined his life.
