The makers of Prathichaya have officially announced the film’s release date, confirming that the Nivin Pauly-starrer will hit theatres on March 26. The update, shared on Tuesday, brings fresh momentum to the political drama, which has remained on the radar since its initial announcement.
The timing is significant. Arriving just days ahead of the Assembly elections, the film’s political backdrop could lend it added relevance, placing it within a charged public discourse where questions of leadership, legacy and power are already in focus. For a film rooted in politics, the proximity to real-world events could shape both its reception and the conversations around it.
This will be Nivin’s second release of the year after Baby Girl, which received a lukewarm response at the box office. In that sense, Prathichaya assumes importance as a project that could recalibrate his current trajectory. Over the years, Nivin has moved between crowd-pleasing entertainers and more performance-driven roles, and this film appears to position him firmly in the latter space.
A story of power and inheritance
Written and directed by B Unnikrishnan, the film marks his first collaboration with Nivin Pauly. Known for working within mainstream frameworks while engaging with social and political themes, Unnikrishnan returns to familiar terrain with Prathichaya, blending personal drama with a larger political canvas.
At its core, the film revolves around a father-son dynamic set within the world of politics. Veteran actor Balachandra Menon plays an established political leader, while Nivin Pauly essays his son, a character positioned at the intersection of legacy and individual ambition. The generational contrast between the two is expected to drive much of the film’s emotional and ideological tension.
The caption, “A father’s legacy. A son’s destiny”, hints at a narrative built on succession, responsibility and the burden of carrying forward a political identity. Set against Kerala’s political landscape, the film is likely to explore how power is inherited, negotiated and, at times, resisted.
The ensemble cast includes Sharaf U Dheen, Sai Kumar, Harisree Ashokan, Ann Augustine, Vishnu Agasthya and Nishant Sagar, suggesting a narrative populated by multiple voices within its political ecosystem. The film is produced by Sree Gokulam Movies along with RD Illuminations LLP.
With the release date now confirmed, Prathichaya moves into its final stretch before hitting screens, carrying both topical relevance and a degree of expectation for its lead actor.
