Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir Show’s Emmy Report Will Surprise Many

The shadowy, black-and-white world of Spider-Noir is about to get a lot brighter, at least when it comes to awards season. A move that will raise eyebrows among fans and critics, the upcoming Nicolas Cage-led series is reportedly positioning itself to compete in an unexpected category for its first Emmys cycle.

Spider-Noir, which weaves film noir aesthetics with comic book action, will reportedly submit for Emmy consideration as a comedy. According to Gold Derby, this strategic decision means the eight-episode thriller will go head-to-head with established comedic heavyweights like Shrinking, Hacks, and The Bear. The latter is a show that has famously straddled the comedy-drama line for years.

While the network or streamer has not officially confirmed the report, the categorization means that audiences should expect something far more unconventional than the gritty detective series the marketing has suggested.

The comedy classification suddenly makes more sense when considering how Nicolas Cage himself describes his portrayal. The Academy Award winner, who plays a live-action version of the Spider-Man Noir character for the first time, has said his performance as Ben Reilly is “70 percent Bogart, and 30 percent Bugs Bunny.” He’s also described the character as “a spider trying to cosplay as a human” (via Esquire).

Spider-Noir will debut May 25 on MGM+’s linear channel, with all eight episodes dropping on Prime Video May 27. Viewers will have a choice between two versions: “Authentic Black & White” and “True-Hue Full Color,” allowing audiences to tailor the film noir experience to their preference.

The series follows Ben Reilly (Cage), an aging private investigator in 1930s New York who used to be the masked vigilante known as the Spider. According to the official series description, Ben “is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

Now, whether the Emmy comedy classification holds or pays off remains to be seen once audiences and awards voters weigh in on Spider-Noir.
