The MMA world got its first proper glimpse into the mind of PFL’s new CEO, John Martin, and it was evident that he admires the UFC and its leadership. In his first MMA-focused interview, for a man tasked with heading a competing organization, it was a strange display of fandom, leaving fans wondering whether the PFL is charting its own course or whether they will be taking notes from Dana White‘s playbook.

Martin’s love is more than just casual fandom; it stems from decades of expertise in sports media. He emphasized his time at Turner and Time Warner, where he worked on high-profile deals such as March Madness with CBS and major NBA contracts, highlighting how such experiences exposed him to top-level sports management. But it was MMA that captured his imagination early on.

“I started as a student in martial arts, and I did that for 15 years. I remember watching UFC 1, and I’ve been hooked ever since,” Martin told MMA Junkie, adding that his love for the sport predates his managerial career. Martin’s admiration for Dana White and the UFC goes beyond nostalgia; he sees them as a benchmark for legitimizing MMA globally.

He admits to trying twice to get Time Warner to acquire the UFC, a plan that ultimately failed but increased his admiration for the organization’s commercial potential. “Even compared to back then, my optimism about the sport is multiples of what it was. It’s great to see the sport expand and be so global,” he said.

In other words, he’s not just amazed by White’s promotional skills; he’s also inspired by the blueprint the UFC created. In fact, when addressing the PFL’s future, Martin frequently returned to the UFC as a reference point. He welcomed the recent Paramount media rights agreement as “a huge validation of the value of MMA” and claimed it shows the sport’s mainstream status.

“MMA is now mainstream, and it would be very hard for anybody to say it’s not a mainstream sport,” he said, emphasizing how White’s leadership helped propel MMA to the global stage. His praise hints that, while the PFL is carving its own path, Martin plans to closely examine the UFC’s playbook while raising the promotion’s prominence. And in order to do so, he plans to bring some big changes.

John Martin to bring major changes and get in talks with ex-Dana White employee

John Martin’s respect for the UFC may influence some of his strategy, but he is also determined to create a lasting impression on the PFL. One of his first tasks as CEO is to streamline the promotion’s championship system, which has long been complicated by tournament titles, combined Bellator belts, and seasonal champions.

“One champion, one division, one world title,” Martin said, emphasizing the importance of clarity for both athletes and fans as a top goal. Another focus is Francis Ngannou, whose time with the PFL has been sporadic since joining in 2023. Ngannou has had limited involvement after winning the Super Fights heavyweight title against Renan Ferreira, missing crucial PFL Africa events, which has prompted criticism from the organization’s leadership.

The PFL CEO stated that he will work directly with ‘The Predator’ to identify his next steps, signaling a hands-on approach to managing the promotion’s top talent. The streamlining of titles will also mean that “special event” belts, such as Ngannou’s Super Fights designation, will only appear in rare cases rather than becoming part of the regular championship hierarchy.

Together with restructuring leadership and combining PFL’s domestic and international operations under his vision, John Martin is laying the groundwork for a promotion that is easy to follow, strategically ambitious, and ready to grow on a global scale. Maybe he might end up giving Dana White a run for his money. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
