DC appears ready to keep the Green Lantern universe around for more than one season. HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series has not premiered yet, but new comments from showrunner Chris Mundy suggest the studio already sees bigger long-term potential for the show. That is an encouraging sign for fans waiting to finally see Hal Jordan and John Stewart properly explored in live-action again.

Chris Mundy talks about the future of Lanterns beyond Season 1

DC already seems to have major plans for Lanterns, even before the first episode hits screens. Showrunner Chris Mundy recently shared that the team is thinking ahead about multiple seasons, although HBO has not officially greenlit Season 2 yet.

The series lands on August 16, and the network will probably watch ratings and fan reactions closely before locking in another chapter. Even so, the early talk about future seasons shows that DC already sees long-term potential in the project.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Mundy admitted he would be “totally bluffing” if he claimed to already know exactly how the story ends. Instead, the writers want room to pivot and grow the series naturally as it moves forward. That game plan lines up with James Gunn’s expanding DC Universe, where shows like Peacemaker and Creature Commandos are already pushing ahead with more than one season.

Lanterns isn’t being made as a usual save-the-galaxy superhero show. Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler joins as Hal Jordan. Instead of nonstop action, the series leans hard into a gritty murder-mystery style that feels closer to True Detective.

The story kicks off in 2016 after a shooting rocks Rushville, Nebraska, and Hal starts suspecting something amiss, possibly even alien-related. Another timeline set in 2026 opens the door to a second mystery that connects with the larger DC Universe.

Chris Mundy also confirmed that Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner will cameo multiple times throughout the season. Mundy jokingly described the fan-favorite Lantern as “fabulously obnoxious,” which honestly sounds pitch-perfect for the character. He also teased that several other names tied to Green Lantern mythology will appear in Season 1.
