The first season of The Summer Hikaru Died aired in Japan for 12 episodes between July 2025 and September 2025. Its summary on Netflix reads, “Six months ago, Hikaru vanished for a week. Now, as his best friend Yoshiki senses something amiss and confronts him, the harrowing truth emerges.”

CygamesPictures served as the animation studio on the inaugural season of the anime. The Japanese voice cast includes Chiaki Kobayashi as Yoshiki Tsujinaka, Shuichiro Umeda as Hikaru, Yumiri Hanamori as Asako Yamagishi, Wakana Kowaka as Rie Kurebayashi, and Chikahiro Kobayashi as Tanaka. It is safe to presume that at least some of these cast members will return for the sophomore season.

Since the debut of the first volume, Mokumokuren’s manga has garnered widespread critical and commercial success. Besides the anime, the series has been adapted for novelization, and a stage play adaptation was also announced earlier. Accordingly, a second season of the show was always on the cards.

The anime has adapted up to certain sections of the manga, which is ongoing. Developing anime projects is generally a long process, especially for something like The Summer Hikaru Died, with its mature and complex themes and gorgeous animation. It’s probably safe to assume that there will be more chapters for the anime to draw from when Season 2 goes into production.

The Summer Hikaru Died deals with elements associated with horror, slice-of-life, and romance genres. The author previously noted that the original manga series is a youth horror with LGBTQ+ themes.
