More than with most genres, casting can make or break even the best fantasy TV shows. Even the most spectacular magical worlds need convincing characters to make them feel real. That challenge becomes greater when a series adapts a beloved novel or video game, as viewers already have a clear idea of who those characters are. For live-action adaptations of anime and manga, the task is harder still. Performers must translate exaggerated character designs and larger-than-life personalities into flesh and blood without losing what made them memorable in the first place.
