Netflix has started developing an ice hockey-themed college romantic drama series, similar to Amazon Prime Video’s Off Campus. This comes as the rival platform’s show continues to attract attention.
Netflix to adapt Hannah Grace’s Icebreaker novel for TV
The streaming giant recently confirmed that they are adapting Hannah Grace’s popular ice hockey romance novel, Icebreaker. The first in the Maple Hill trilogy, the book fueled conversations on BookTok. It also made it to the New York Times bestseller list, staying for 70 consecutive weeks.
Additionally, it surpassed nearly 5 million copies sold globally. Furthermore, it built on its status as an internationally recognized novel through its translation into 24 languages and distribution across 34 territories.
Jinny Howe, Netflix head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, announced Icebreaker’s existence at the BANFF World Media Festival. The story follows Anastasia Allen, a competitive figure skater aiming to win the Olympic gold. Her career trajectory dramatically changes when she crosses paths with Nate Hawkins. He is a hockey player who is similarly ambitious in his pursuit of the NHL.
The pair sparks a cold rivalry on the ice rink they are forced to share after an accident. However, an obvious mutual attraction forms between them. Thus, they are forced to confront what is stronger — their budding love or their respective ambitions.
Amanda Lasher, whose previous credits include Gossip Girl and Togetherness, will serve as showrunner. She will also assume writing duties, joined by Jade Bartlett, who developed and wrote the pilot. The latter previously worked on Road House, Miller’s Girl, and Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Meanwhile, Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Mina Lefevre will executive produce through their Unwell Productions banner. Lasher and Bartlett also executive produce.
Lasher said of her involvement in the series, “I have been a fan of steamy YA since the seventh grade, reading Judy Blume stealthily hidden behind a textbook. She continued, “I love this genre, and it’s been a joy working with Jade, the team at Unwell, and Netflix to bring Hannah Grace’s beloved Icebreaker novel to the screen.”
Casting has not officially begun. The streamer will likely share more information as production progresses.
