During a video call with a 9-year-old boy, she listened as he shared his wish to leave detention and attend a spelling bee. “It was unbelievably surreal… it broke me,” and it was something I never thought I’d encounter in life.“ Accurso added, “We’re trying to get a child out of jail to do a spelling bee. I just never thought those words would go together (via NBC).”

Accurso is now teaming up with lawyers and activists to push things forward. She is working to shut down the detention center and reunite families with their communities. The move has sparked debate, especially because she is known as a children’s entertainer. The entertainer explained that she stands by her views and believes speaking up for kids should never be seen as controversial.
