Many of the best moments in Monk would never have happened if the show had stuck to its original plan for Captain Leland Stottlemeyer. Stottlemeyer is in charge of the San Francisco Police Department's Homicide Division and works with Adrian Monk on numerous cases. He and Monk have a long history of working together, going back to when they were both starting in the police force, and before Monk's wife, Trudy, was killed.
