Mohanlal has approached the Delhi High Court seeking legal protection over his personality rights, becoming the latest high-profile name to take such a step. According to reports, Justice Jyoti Singh is expected to hear the matter later today.
Legal step to protect identity
In his plea, Mohanlal has sought safeguards against the unauthorised use of his name, image, voice and overall likeness. If granted, the protection would enable him to secure injunctions against individuals or entities attempting to commercially exploit his identity without consent. This includes usage across advertisements, merchandise and increasingly, content generated using artificial intelligence.
The move places Mohanlal alongside several prominent names in the industry who have pursued similar legal remedies in recent times. Actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Kamal Haasan have all sought personality rights protection, signalling a wider industry shift towards legally securing one’s public identity.
AI-driven risks push industry action
Mohanlal’s petition underscores a growing concern within the entertainment industry, the rapid advancement of AI tools that can convincingly replicate faces, voices and even mannerisms. With deepfake technology becoming more accessible and sophisticated, the line between authentic and fabricated content is increasingly blurred.
For celebrities, this presents a dual threat. On one hand, there is the risk of reputational damage through misleading or manipulated content. On the other, there is the possibility of financial exploitation, with third parties monetising a star’s identity without authorisation.

Legal protection through personality rights offers a framework to counter such misuse. By obtaining court-backed safeguards, actors can act swiftly against unauthorised usage, ensuring their public image remains under their control. Mohanlal’s move reflects a proactive approach in addressing a challenge that is only expected to grow in the coming years.
Busy slate continues despite legal move
Even as he takes legal steps to protect his identity, Mohanlal continues to remain active on the professional front. Among his upcoming releases is Drishyam 3, which reunites him with director Jeethu Joseph. The film also features returning cast members Meena, Esther Anil, Ansiba Hassan, K. B. Ganesh Kumar and Murali Gopy.
The film recently made headlines after producer Antony Perumbavoor postponed its release due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, a key overseas market for Malayalam cinema.
On the other hand, Mohanlal’s much-anticipated ensemble drama Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan, remains on track for its April 23 release. The film brings together a formidable cast including Mammootty, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara, Revathi and Fahadh Faasil.
As the industry grapples with the implications of emerging technologies, Mohanlal’s legal move marks another significant moment in the ongoing conversation around digital rights and celebrity identity. It is a reminder that in an age where technology can recreate almost anything, ownership of one’s persona has never been more important.
