After the Brewers’ 3-2 win over the Padres, the roof became the biggest talking point from Game 1. After a fly ball hit the roof of the stadium, everything changed for the Padres, and evetually ended up losing the game. So the MLB has made a call to keep things uncontroversial in Game 2.
“The hotline message says “the roof will be OPEN” for Sunday’s game against San Diego,” reported Front Office Sports.
It has now been confirmed that MLB has ordered that American Family Field will have its roof open for Game 2 of the NLDS. MLB controls postseason roof decisions, and light showers were expected around Saturday night’s game. The league told both teams the roof would stay closed under normal weather procedures. Both sides agreed before the game, leaving American Family Field sealed for Game 1.
Nobody expected that decision to become part of the game’s biggest moment.
That moment came in the ninth when Ty France stepped up with a runner on base. France launched a ball that looked like it would give Padres the lead. Instead, it struck a roof cable and dropped into Jackson Chourio’s glove. The ball left France’s bat at 105 mph with a 49-degree launch angle, so it was surely a homer.
The Padres challenged the ruling, but review confirmed the ball had struck above fair territory. American Family Field rules state that balls hitting the roof in fair territory remain playable. If the ball had struck the cable over foul territory, it would have become dead.
That ruling kept the ball alive and gave the Brewers a crucial second out of the inning. Jackson Merrill then lined out to right field, ending San Diego’s Game 1. The Brewers escaped with a 3-2 win, with the roof becoming the MVP of the game.
Now, the Brewers carry that 1-0 advantage into Game 2, with the roof set to be open. Sunday’s sunnier forecast means the unusual roof situation should not return, leaving San Diego with a chance to come back into the series.
