Mizoram guest professional Chinmay Sutar achieved a historic milestone on Monday, becoming only the second cricketer in the history of the Ranji Trophy to score a quadruple century. Playing against Nagaland in a Plate group match at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima, Sutar reached exactly 400 not out before his side declared their first innings.
The 26-year-old reached the landmark off 517 deliveries in an innings that featured 46 boundaries and seven sixes. Mizoram declared immediately upon Sutar reaching the 400-run mark, ending their first innings at 581/9. The achievement ended a 76-year wait for an Indian batter to join the exclusive club of quadruple centurions in the country’s premier domestic tournament.
Sutar is only the second player in the 92-year history of the to reach a quadruple century.
Sutar’s marathon stay at the crease was supported by a remarkable final-wicket stand. He and No. 11 Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak shared an unbeaten 189-run partnership for the tenth wicket. While Chhakchhuak contributed just 14 runs from 51 balls, his defensive resilience allowed Sutar to systematically dismantle the Nagaland bowling attack and secure his place in the record books.
Historical Context and Records
With this performance, Sutar joins Bhausaheb Nimbalkar as the only other player to cross the 400-run threshold in the Ranji Trophy. Nimbalkar famously scored 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948, a record that remains the highest individual score in the competition’s history.
In reaching 400, Sutar surpassed the previous second-highest score in the tournament’s history, which was held by Prithvi Shaw. Shaw had scored 379 for Mumbai against Assam in January 2023. Sutar’s feat is also the highest individual score ever recorded in the Plate division of the Ranji Trophy.
From Mumbai to Mizoram
Sutar is a product of the Mumbai cricketing circuit, having previously represented the city at the Under-23 level. The son of former first-class cricketer Rajesh Sutar, he moved to Mizoram as a guest player for the 2024-25 season to seek more consistent opportunities at the senior level. Analysis of his recent form suggests this transition has provided the necessary platform for the middle-order batter to translate his potential into significant scoring.
Before this innings, the 76-year gap since Bhausaheb Nimbalkar first reached the milestone had seen several players come close, including Sanjay Manjrekar (377) and Shaw, but the 400-run barrier had remained elusive until Monday’s second-day play in Sovima.
