The 2009 blockbuster featuring Michelle Rodriguez is trending on Disney+ this week. The action-packed sci-fi epic has returned to dominate streaming charts 17 years after its original release. It is once again captivating audiences, attracting both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
Avatar: Fire and Ash brings Part 1 and 2 back on streaming charts
According to FlixPatrol‘s report for June 29, 2026, Avatar ranks #7 on both Disney+’s Top 10 Movies and Top 10 Overall lists in the United States. Meanwhile, the franchise’s second installment, Avatar: The Way of Water, sits at #8. Both films began trending shortly after the third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, arrived on the platform last week. Fire and Ash currently leads both charts.
Interestingly, that’s not the only franchise that’s dominating the chart. The first four Toy Story movies have also seen streaming resurgence in the wake of Toy Story 5’s release. They occupy spots 2 through 5 in the order of their release.
Avatar is a sci-fi saga created, written, and directed by James Cameron. He was the sole writer of the original movie but shared credit with Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno on both sequels.
Set in a distant future, the story follows humans who travel to an alien planet called Pandora to mine a valuable mineral. The story follows Jake Sully, a disabled Marine who controls an alien-human avatar to interact with the local Na’vi species and convince them to relocate from their ancestral homeland. As he becomes a part of their tribe, Jake’s loyalty shifts, leading him to defend the Na’vi and their world against human exploitation.
The cast features Michelle Rodriguez, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver, among others.
Released on December 18, 2009, Avatar was a monumental success. Made on a reported budget of $237 million, it ended its original theatrical run with $2.7 billion at the global box office. Over the years, it received several re-releases, pushing the total to $2.9 billion. Critically, it holds an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, followed in 2022 and earned $2.3 billion globally. However, in terms of rating, it received 76% from critics. The latest entry, Avatar: Fire and Ash, was released on December 19, 2025. It grossed roughly $1.48 billion. The rating dropped further, earning a 66% critics’ score.
