Aaron Zelman addressed one of Memory of a Killer’s most pivotal narrative decisions ahead of the show’s anticipated second season. The co-showrunner explained why two major characters met their end in the Season 1 finale, and why those deaths were never really up for debate.

Co-showrunner Aaron Zelman confirmed the writers always intended Grant as Season 1’s primary villain. Speaking to TV Insider, Zelman stated that her death was a planned narrative endpoint from the beginning.

“Grant was always going to be the sort of big villain of Season 1,” Zelman said. “We always thought of her that way.”

Nicky’s fate, however, was less certain during development. The writers initially considered killing her off around Episode 8 before changing course. They ultimately kept her alive longer because of her romantic storyline with Angelo.

“We really liked the character, and the actress was wonderful, and we wanted to use more of her,” Zelman explained. He added that the team wanted to explore how Angelo, who keeps people at a distance, navigated that relationship. Her death still carries significant emotional weight for his character moving into Season 2.

Zelman also addressed Gina Torres’s portrayal of Grant, highlighting what made her effective as the season’s antagonist. Torres brought both strength and vulnerability to the role simultaneously.

“She’s just such a powerful presence onscreen, but at the same time, there’s a vulnerability to her,” he said. That combination made Grant’s motivations feel grounded, particularly once viewers learned she was avenging her son’s death.

Zelman revealed that he and fellow showrunner Glenn Kessler only joined the series at Episode 4, with production on Episodes 1 through 3 already mostly complete. The pair immediately committed to Grant as the Ferryman and made minor adjustments to earlier episodes to support that decision.

Memory of a Killer Season 1 is now streaming on Hulu.
