There were quite a few narratives that kept fans and analysts buzzing during the 2025 Draft. While many focused on top players like Caleb Williams and Drake Maye, one storyline overshadowed them all: Shedeur Sanders remaining unpicked well into the third round of the draft. Despite being one of Colorado’s mainstays last season and having the NFL pedigree, Sanders’ slide through the rounds was surprising. So much so that POTUS Donald Trump had to voice his concern after the QB was not picked in the first round. With teams passing him over lesser-ranked QBs, there is a growing concern about where he will end up.
Many speculated that concerns about his transition to the NFL, his connection to his famous father Deion Sanders, and questions about his competition level in college led to his unexpected slide. Teams like the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Las Vegas Raiders, Indianapolis Colts, and Minnesota Vikings all had quarterback needs but chose to prioritize other positions instead. The likes of Cleveland and Seattle also chose to go with different prospects, leaving Sanders stranded. Now, with Sanders staring at the possibility of being a fourth-round pick or worse, his chances of being picked by a team like the Packers are also thin, according to The Atheltic’s Matt Schneidman.
A fan on X asked Schneidman, “We are are drafting Shedeur S. aren’t we?” only for Green Bay Packers’ beat reporter to reply, “I think Packers take a QB today. They have five picks and Malik Willis will probably be too expensive to sign as QB2 next offseason. Let a rookie develop before backing up Love in 2026. But even if Shedeur falls to the fifth or sixth, don’t see it. I would love it for the story.” The Packers have quite an arsenal now that they have drafted Matthew Golden as their first pick and WR Savion Williams.
Jordan Love and Malik Willis can work with. There’s Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks,
“The 13-time world champion, Green Bay Packers, for the first time since 2002, draft a wide receiver – Matthew Golden.” It almost feels like they waited for the drafts to be in Lambeau Field and threw all the scripts out the window. And it’s not just Golden going to the green and gold. HC Matt LaFleur has tripled down on offense and added two more weapons. Anthony Belton – OT pick from round two, and Savion Williams – another WR from round 3. But what’s their next move? Will they add more depth to the offense, or make another move that has the crowd going ‘ooooh’?

According to Matt Schneidman’s post on X, he believes it might be time for the Packers to choose a QB in the next rounds. “I think Packers take a QB today. They have five picks, and Malik Willis will probably be too expensive to sign as QB2 next offseason. Let a rookie develop before backing up Love in 2026. But even if Shedeur falls to the fifth or sixth, don’t see it. I would love it for the story.” The Packers have quite the arsenal now that Jordan Love and Malik Willis can work with. There’s Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, and, of course, Golden and Savion are in the fray as well. So it might just be the right time to give another young QB a chance to develop. But will it be Shedeur Sanders? It doesn’t seem likely at all.
Sander’s draft stock has basically taken a nosedive out of an airplane over the Mariana Trench during a storm. He’s not going to the Packers, that’s for sure. So, who’s the QB that the Packers might choose? Whoever it is, if the Packers draft a QB, that’s a crystal clear message to Jordan Love, one he cannot afford to ignore any longer.
Rising heat for Jordan Love
If the Packers don’t throw a lifeline to Sanders, who could be the QB that adds to their roster? Maybe Quinn Ewers, Will Howard, Kyle McCord, or Riley Leonard? They do have some great choices with these players. And whoever it is, Jordan Love will have another guy raring to take his spot. Malik Willis at QB2 has already shown he can play the spot when Love got that nasty MCL injury in September last season. Despite his absence, the Packers still managed to win some games with Willis under center. And now, things are looking even more grim for Love.

When asked about moving from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love as QB, HC Matt LaFleur said, “People probably don’t realize how tough that is. You go from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers and now you’re up Jordan Love – There’s a lot of pressure that comes with that position.” So while LaFleur does have hope for Love, there’s pressure on him as well. If the Packers draft a QB, he will get the chance to develop under Willis and Love, and if given the shot, the new blood might even be able to make some moves of his own. If by any chance Love or Willis suffer an injury, the new QB will be under center and racing to prove his mettle against the big league names that will throw tackles at him from all sides.
As Matt Schneidman puts it, “Willis will probably be too expensive to sign as QB2 next offseason,” so that’s a concern too. If Willis walks out, and the new guy develops well under Love, it’s probably goodbye for him after all. Whatever the decision, and whatever the consequence, Jordan Love will have to step up and prove he belongs in the green and gold this new season. He has the weapons to get him there, too. We will just have to wait and see what the Packers do in the remaining rounds and what their roster shapes up to be in the end. Stay tuned, folks, this year’s draft drama is nowhere near the end yet.
