Malcolm’s right, life is unfair. Malcolm in the Middle’s Bryan Cranston explains Erik Per Sullivan’s absence from the upcoming reboot.

When the popular sitcom was announced to return for a four-episode special on Disney+, fans were also anticipating the return of the original stars. However, it was later revealed that Sullivan would not return to reprise his role as Dewey, making him the only main cast member absent from the upcoming reboot. The role will instead be taken over by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark (Fargo).

Why is Erik Per Sullivan missing from the Malcolm in the Middle reboot?

In an interview on the Fly on the Wall podcast (via GamesRadar+), Cranston — who played the beloved TV dad Hal — revealed that he had a conversation with Sullivan and asked him to return as Dewey once again. Sullivan has declined the offer and admitted he just wasn’t interested in acting.

“I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic!’ And I go, ‘Yeah, so we’re looking forward to having you back.’ He goes, ’Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic,’” said Cranston.

The actor continued, “He’s actually going to Harvard. He’s really, really smart, and he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now. He said, ‘Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something. So I’m not into it.’”

Malcolm in the Middle aired on Fox for seven seasons, spanning a total of 151 episodes. It ran from 2000 to 2006. Since its conclusion, Sullivan — now in his 30s — has stayed out of the public eye.

The upcoming reboot hails from original series creator Linwood Boomer. In addition to Cranston, other returning original stars include Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, Jane Kaczmarek as Lois, Christopher Masterson as Francis, and Justin Berfield as Reese. The new cast includes Kiana Madeira, Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae, and Keeley Karsten.

An exact release date hasn’t been announced.
