It's difficult to name an individual who has had more of an impact on the fantasy genre than J.R.R. Tolkien. More than 70 years after the publication of The Lord of the Rings, traces of Middle-earth can still be found across countless books, movies, tabletop RPGs, and video games. Elves, dwarves, orcs, ancient prophecies, and sprawling quests have become so deeply ingrained in fantasy that they're often treated as genre staples. According to Erika Ishii, however, that's exactly where modern fantasy has gone wrong.
