The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner revealed Daveigh Chase’s official cause of death as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The former child actress, legally named Daveigh Schwallier, died on June 16 at the age of 35. The medical examiner’s report also notes “chronic polysubstance use” as a significant contributing condition. Authorities classified her death as natural, with Dr. Martina Kennedy overseeing the case.

Chase rose to prominence as the voice of Lilo in Disney’s animated hit Lilo & Stitch. She also delivered a memorable performance as Samara in the 2002 horror classic The Ring. Her other credits included Donnie Darko, Big Love, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, ER, and Beethoven’s 5th. Her last recorded role came in 2016 for the video game Let It Die.

Her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, earlier informed TMZ that meningitis and a blood infection caused septic complications. “Behind the scenes, she’s faced more than her share of hardship,” he shared in a GoFundMe post. He further wrote, “After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown LA.”

Her father, John David Schwallier, disclosed to The New York Times that Chase had been living without housing in Los Angeles. He stated that substance abuse had affected his daughter since her adolescent years. Schwallier acknowledged the two had not communicated in over 15 years before her passing. He reached the hospital just before she died after maintaining contact with Hernandez.

Following her departure from Hollywood, Chase encountered legal issues involving drug possession and stolen vehicle charges. The medical examiner’s case file remains open under investigator Trini Godoy.
