Lili Reinhart says fans can expect a faithful adaptation of The Love Hypothesis, a Star Wars fan fiction, with her next movie. The actor shared that preserving what readers loved most remained a priority throughout filming. She also explained why the story convinced her to return to the romantic comedy genre after initially having doubts.
Lili Reinhart says The Love Hypothesis stays faithful to the book
Although Lili Reinhart had not read Ali Hazelwood’s novel when the screenplay first reached her, that quickly changed. After finishing the script, she picked up the book and said it completely won her over. Reinhart admitted she wasn’t planning to make a romantic comedy, but the story changed her mind.
More importantly, she said everyone involved wanted to protect what made the novel such a favorite. “The heart of the book is in the film,” she said, adding that the team wanted to “totally respect” the source material while keeping its characters and story intact (via People).
The film follows Ph.D. student Olive Smith, who unexpectedly kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen to convince her best friend she has moved on from her ex. That impulsive decision leads to a fake relationship, which gradually develops into genuine romance.
Reinhart said one of her favorite aspects wasn’t just the love story but the friendship at its center. She explained that Olive’s loyalty to her best friend drives the entire plot, making the romance feel more meaningful. She also described Olive and Adam as opposites rather than traditional “enemies-to-lovers” characters.
Tom Bateman shared a similar journey. Like Reinhart, he first read the screenplay before picking up the novel and soon “fell in love with the characters and the world.” He acknowledged that adapting a fan-favorite book comes with pressure because every reader imagines the characters differently.
According to Bateman, the cast constantly referred back to the novel during production. “The book was around set all the time,” he recalled, adding that he and Reinhart even reread sections before filming scenes.
The upcoming adaptation will arrive in theaters on September 23,2026.
