After an underwhelming opening-day box office return for Supergirl, the latest update regarding the much-awaited Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, could shift the tide towards DCU once again. In a recent interview, James Gunn’s wife Jennifer Holland provided an insight into David Corenswet’s upcoming outing as the Man of Steel, dubbing it as her filmmaker husband’s ‘best’ work so far.
Jennifer Holland says Man of Tomorrow is James Gunn’s best
At a screening of Supergirl, the Peacemaker star hyped up her husband’s upcoming DC directorial, despite it still being a year away from its release.
“I can tell you that I have seen an enormous, enormous portion of the movie, and I am so excited for Man of Tomorrow,” Jennifer Holland said while speaking with GamesRadar+. “It is different…I don’t wanna say this. Ugh. It might be James’s best…my favorite movie of James, and I haven’t even seen the whole thing yet. I’m just…I love the movie. I’m really excited about it. It feels like a step up to me in a lot of ways. I’m excited for people to see it, and he’s not done filming it yet.”
The Superman update should come as a breath of fresh air for DCU fans following the recent mishap with Supergirl. The Milly Alcock-led movie only managed to rake in $38 million domestically during its opening weekend, with its worldwide haul rounding up to a meager $68 million. With the movie’s production budget ranging between $170 million and $186 million without the marketing costs, Supergirl faces an uphill battle to break even.
The critical response to the movie centered around Superman’s cousin hasn’t fared much better, with Supergirl garnering a subpar Tomatometer score of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. Audiences, however, have had a kinder reaction to the movie, resulting in its 76% Popcornmeter score on the review-aggregation website.
Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Superman sequel, titled Man of Tomorrow, is currently on track to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
