Labour scheme ‘opens door to thousands more migrants’

Shabana Mahmood's Ukrainian-style refugee sponsorship scheme will open the door to thousands of new migrants, the Tories have claimed. The Home Secretary is pressing forward with plans to provide "safe and legal routes" for refugees fleeing conflict zones to enter Britain. The scheme will be modelled on Canada's community sponsorship scheme, which allows people to sponsor refugees privately by committing to at least 12 months of financial and emotional support, and the UK's Homes for Ukraine programme, introduced following Russia's invasion in 2022.
