Kurt Russellwas one of the most popular action stars of the 1980s, as his series of collaborations with John Carpenter allowed him to play within many different subgenres. Unlike some of his contemporaries, such as Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal, Russell didn’t simply play the same character in every single film; his performance as Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China was radically different compared to his role as Snake Plissken in Escape from New York. That being said, he was still largely cast in heroic roles, which meant that it was shocking when Russell played a brooding, corrupt police officer in the crime thriller Dark Blue.
