Kristen Stewart’s Wife Had a Brutally Honest First Take on ‘Deadbeat’ Twilight Star

Dylan Meyer recently revealed what she thought of Kristen Stewart when they first met, long before the pair began dating. The filmmaker admitted that Stewart’s personality did not fit her idea of a typical teen idol. She also offered a glimpse into their early friendship and how their relationship eventually developed into a marriage.

Dylan Meyer has recalled her first impression of Kristen Stewart, saying she was surprised that the actress had ever been presented as a “teen idol.” Meyer, who is now married to Stewart, said her experience meeting the Twilight star did not match the public image she had seen.

Meyer first met Stewart while working on American Ultra in 2013. The two quickly became friends, although they did not pursue a romantic relationship at the time. “I met her on another movie, and we just really liked each other. At the time we just thought each other were really rad,” Meyer told PEOPLE.

The director recalled being struck by how different Stewart seemed from the persona associated with her early fame. “I was like, ‘I can’t believe anyone ever let this person be a teen idol. She’s such a deadbeat like me.’ Like, ‘That’s so crazy. She’s been miscast,’” she said.

The pair eventually went their separate ways, remaining out of each other’s lives for several years. Meyer said they reconnected after “six or seven years,” and their friendship eventually became romantic. “Then we were falling in love,” she said.

Meyer directed The Wrong Girls, which stars Stewart and Alia Shawkat. The film follows two financially struggling best friends whose lives spiral into chaos after they become involved in a case of mistaken identity. 

In a previous interview with ComingSoon, Stewart also discussed the film’s unusual use of internal dialogue. In several scenes, the characters’ thoughts are heard rather than spoken aloud. “It was fun,” the actress said of the process, describing it as one of the more technical aspects of making a film.
