One of the biggest names to come out of the music industry in the 2000s, Katy Perry continues to dominate headlines even to this day, primarily due to the impact she has had on pop culture. Accordingly, the phrase “Katy Perry Whipped Cream Bra” has begun to trend as fans rediscover the vibrant outfit she wore for the music video of her hit single “California Gurls.”
What is the ‘Katy Perry whipped cream bra’ trend?
While Perry sported a number of unique costumes for her 2010 song from the album Teenage Dream, the one where she wore a sky blue bikini top with cupcakes, along with a shiny blue wig and denim shorts, seems to have caught fans’ attention, a whopping 15 years after the single’s release.
One of Katy Perry’s bras from the video also shoots out whipped cream at one point, which has since become an iconic sequence in mainstream pop culture. Taking inspiration from the board game Candyland and set in the fictional region of “Candyfornia,” California Gurls’ music video sees Katy Perry going on a colorful mission to rescue the Queens from the clutches of Snoop Dogg’s Sugar Daddy and his army of Gummy Bears.
Explaining the decision to add the element of whipped cream coming out of her top in an earlier interview with NYLON, Katy Perry’s stylist Johnny Wujek noted, “We had to figure out a way to defeat the Gummy Bears and Katy was like, ‘What if my bra shot out Cool Whip and killed them all?'” He added, “I literally had no idea how to even make that. But I said, ‘Yeah, we can do that. We can make that happen.’ And that was just a process. I got to work with really cool special effects people to make that happen.”
Upon its release, California Gurls ended up breaking multiple records, even earning a nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 53rd Grammy Awards.
