Reflections is a remarkable debut album from Kanine, packed with drum and bass bangers and no skips, built for a night on the dancefloor.
Kanine is an absolute force in the drum and bass world. He crafts music that strikes a delicate balance between heavy, relentless energy and addictive melody, earning him an ever-growing following drawn into his captivating sound. But with his name next to seven #1 singles on Beatport’s Drum & Bass Top 100, it’s wild to believe that his new album, Reflections, is only his debut.
The album is a standout work of drum and bass and should contend for any album-of-the-year list. The production is highly detailed, thoughtful, and tasteful. The energy is visceral and infectious, and the melodies are rhythmic and encourage movement. The vocals are alluring, and the lyrics are evocative and memorable.
While electronic music is often associated with clubs and festivals, many songs also work well for workouts, sunset drives, or background music for studying. But Reflections feels like an album meant to be experienced in a rave. It evokes imagery of a dark warehouse, strobe lights piercing through hazy fog. It tickles at familiar sensations of alcohol sticking to the soles of your shoes and your skin slick with sweat from exerting yourself on a crowded dancefloor.
“Reflections is my debut album and a concept I’ve been wanting to realise for years, and now felt like the right time,” said Kanine. “Listening to your favorite songs can take you back to all the memories and moments you’ve experienced while listening to them and on this album. Each song represents a moment in time for me. I hope this album becomes part of listeners’ memories (reflections), the same way my favorite songs have become part of mine.”
“Bloodstream” is an earworm you won’t want to shake away. “Deeper” with Raphaella and “Midnight Sun” are love songs as much a declaration of love to the dancefloor as they are about a significant other. “Power” is infused with intensity and crosses over into hard techno soundscapes in the second drop — two polar genres that go together seamlessly time and time again.
“Touchdown” with SOTA and Mila Falls, along with “Lost Tonight” with Arcando and HEIGHTS, are two magnetic powerhouse collaborations. Meanwhile, “Feel the Vibration” was my fifth most listened-to song on my 2025 Spotify Wrapped. That was my electronic track of the year, no doubt, and it still holds up 18 months later.
However, while Kanine made an incredible debut album that sounds cohesive and polished, I had one issue with its rollout. I am a massive Kanine fan. If he’s at a festival, I’m at his sets. When he announces new music, I’m listening to it on release day. So when he announced Reflections, I was ecstatic.
But I have to admit my enthusiasm was slightly tempered when I peeked at the track list a few days prior and saw that we’d only be getting two new songs on release day. When you listen to a new album all the way through, much of the fun comes from being surprised by the new songs. But in this case, I’d already heard ten of 12 songs — 83% of the album — as singles. While I loved every song on Reflections, I wish I had experienced most of them for the first time on release day rather than mostly in advance because I feel like the listening experience would’ve been more special.
Nonetheless, it’s still worth listening to Reflections all the way through. From the first track to the last, it’s all gas, no brakes. It captures the exhilaration of the rave through its vivacious atmosphere, and akin to its name, it invites listeners to reflect on their love for music and raving as the soundscapes stir up fond memories of long nights on the dancefloor.
