Joseph Gordon-Levitt Cast in New Hulu TV Show Like Shōgun, First Details Revealed

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will soon star in a Shōgun-like TV show from Hulu. The new project comes from Shōgun co-executive producer Shannon Goss.

Gordon-Levitt has joined the cast of Hulu’s Gaijin. Set in the 21st century, the series will follow a Westerner’s adventures in Japan, reports Deadline. The show comes from Lionsgate Television.

The project is inspired by the real-life story of American chef and cookbook author Ivan Orkin, who founded the Ivan Ramen restaurant and brand.

What else do we know about the new Hulu TV show with Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

Hulu’s Gaijin will follow the story of an American culinary school dropout named Ivan who moves to Tokyo after his wife’s death, accompanied by his son.

Hoping to connect with his late wife’s homeland, Ivan (Gordon-Levitt) tries to build a stronger relationship with his Japanese in-laws while pursuing his longtime dream of opening his own ramen restaurant. The story will follow Ivan as he overcomes cultural differences and other obstacles to build a successful ramen business in Japan.

As for the real-life chef, Orkin gained huge popularity for opening his ramen shops in Japan before he expanded the Ivan Ramen brand to his hometown and London. Later, he also appeared on Season 3 of Netflix’s Chef’s Table.

As for Gordon-Levitt’s recent projects, he was seen in Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man. Next, the actor will star in the upcoming horror movie Pendulum, scheduled for release in 2027. The film is helmed by Mark Heyman (Black Swan, The Skeleton Twins). The cast also includes Norman Reedus and Phoebe Dynevor, among others.

Hulu’s Gaijin has Ivan Orkin and Gordon-Levitt as executive producers, alongside Jared Geller, Mark Fasano, Matthew Goldberg, Mike Blutstein, and Andrew Gottlieb.

Gaijin has yet to receive an official release window from Hulu.
