Jenna Ortega teases what’s next in her acting career. The shift also marks a significant departure from the 23-year-old’s previous roles. The Wednesday star recently sat for an interview in which she discussed the next phase of her career, upcoming projects, and offered insights into her previous roles.

During an interview with Esquire magazine, Gen Z’s premier Scream Queen revealed that she wants to take on characters she truly connects with after being experimental with her roles so far.

Ortega said, “I’ve been in this experimental phase. It’s only been in the last year or so—especially with the show coming to a head and getting ready to enter this next chapter in my life and career—that I’ve really honed in. I’ve seen some things now. I’ve tried some things. Now it’s important to me to be focused on stories and characters that I feel truly connected to.”

While she connects with her iconic Netflix character Wednesday in some ways, Ortega wants to play more roles that can be relatable to her and her viewers. She would be stepping away from the horror seen after working on many iconic projects over the past few years.

From Wednesday to her latest movies, Jenna Ortega keeps pushing herself

Jenna Ortega’s rise to fame was gradual, yet she ended up achieving overnight success with Wednesday. Over the past years, she has worked on many projects in the horror and thriller genres. Some of the most notable titles included already-established franchises like Scream and Beetlejuice.

Alongside playing the titular character on the streaming platform since 2022, she also starred in Miller’s Girl, X, and Death of a Unicorn. However, her aforementioned career turn would begin with her upcoming movie, Klara and the Sun.

Helmed by Taika Waititi and based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. In the interview, Ortega stated that she had a lot in common with her character, Klara. “It was very exciting for me to play this naive, hopeful, optimistic character who’s very different than the characters that I’ve been playing recently.”

Moreover, the actress has also secured a role in J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi fantasy The Great Beyond. In this movie, she plays a lost young person in a new city. The character aligns with the big shift she wants for her career.

Ortega will next be seen in Waititi’s movie releasing on October 23, 2026. She is also currently filming for Wednesday Season 3 in Dublin, which is expected to be out in 2027. Another, The Great Beyond, which also stars Glenn Powell, Emma Mackey, and Samuel L. Jackson, is slated for release on October 1, 2027.
